I'm not sure if we've ever had any sports discussions here at the bar, aside from the Olympics and me going cuckoo for cocoa puffs over Rafael Nadal, but since we've had quite a bit of football talk in the comments section of Megan's post, I think we might be ready for this.
Disclaimer before I start: I am a big Florida Gator fan. Always have been (since age 6), probably always will be, yes even though I went to UGA. I'm an enigma, I know. Now you are aware of any bias I may or may not have on the current issue, and away we go.
I'm dying to know - am I the only person who thinks the BCS is a load of malarkey and should be abolished in favor of a playoff system? Why is it exactly that NCAA Division I football is the only college sport with such random, subjective championship-deciding as polls and rankings? Who out there is in support of this madness? Does anyone actually understand this stupid formula?
Really and truly, I am curious. I guess I like the tradition of the bowls and the neurotic excitement of "will your team lose a game," but for as long as I've been a football fan (forever), I've never understood the lack of playoffs.
I know, I know, it probably all comes down to money, and if so, that truly Sucks.
P.S. Did ya'll know they cancelled class in grade schools and high schools in Athens and some surrounding areas the day before the GA-FL game? It seems there was a pattern of "twice as many teachers" calling in sick that day as a normal school day, and they were constantly short on teachers that day. Loves it.
(P.S. Squared. Confidential to Sheila - Texas Tech was awesome the other night! Unfortunately, I now have to pull against them versus Oklahoma or Oklahoma State due to BCS nonsense and the fact that I need Texas Tech and/or Penn St to lose before Florida *hopefully* meets Alabama in the SEC Championship so the Gators can remain in the title hunt. Other than that, I'm a convert because Graham what's-his-name - totally hot. Hottest player I've seen this year.)
6 tips left at the bar:
Niki
I agree its like we have to wait for the drunks at the BCS council to pick their favs after the weekend- I never like how they arrange the standings-
duh, playoffs? Isn't that how we used to get to the championship game? Oh wait that was pee-wee football in Lawton Oklahoma...
I like how you have your ' if so and so beats so and so and then we play west bum-fuck, we'll move up two past east mountain valley whoever and then we may get to the playoffs...that is a huge WHATEVER...must be some serious cash...
I told Megan early on that OU-Georgia in Miami could be fun....
If any of you are on the fence about the election, here's what Obama has to say about the BCS:
Asked what one thing he would change in sports, Obama advocated a college football playoff: "I'm fed up with these computer rankings and this and that and the other. Get eight teams -- the top eight teams right at the end. . . . Decide on a national champion."
Maybe he could put that at the top of his priority list if he wins....
Damn. If only I'd known this kind of change was on his agenda last week before I voted!
I agree, scratch this BCS junk. PLUS, the SEC and Big XII get screwed since they have a championship game which will give one team an extra loss.
That's one of the best things I've heard Obama say, so I will at least be comforted in that fact if (when) he wins.
Niki - first, thanks for the shout out. It truly was the most awesome game, although I almost had 4 coronaries (the near-interception at 36 seconds & then the 3 penalties with 1 second to go!!). However, I understand that you cannot cheer for us all the time. But if you could muster just a wee bit of support during both games, I promise to back whoever the Nittany Lions are up against.
Now, about the BCS: I totally HATE the BCS. We got into a huge discussion on Saturday night & think it is the stupidest system. I like BJ's explanation - but don't forget to throw in the factoring of how tough said team's schedule was. Like the university's have any say in their schedules. It's total crap.
And I think Obama would have been wise to discuss his stance earlier in the campaign. There might have been fewer undecided voters.
Ooh - I almost forgot! His name is Graham Harrell. And I think he looks like a young Tom Brady (but without the supermodel girlfriend)
