Truth*: My Secret Honky Tonk Shame

*I really did want to take dare on this one - and I was going to do T.I.'s rap from Justin Timberlake's "My Love," but my boss had the digital recorder in his office, and well, I was too embarrassed to tell him why I needed it. If permitted and if circumstances change, I'll double post this week. In the meantime...

I know that there are others at the Smartini Bar with an affinity for hearing country tunes on the jukebox. I am not one of them. I do like old country - Cash, Waylon, Jones. Marty Robbins and Hank. And obviously, I love Dolly Parton. But "today's country"? Not a big fan.

But there are a few songs recorded in my lifetime that I can't resist. Here's the top five on my sing-along list of shame...and when I say "sing-along", I really mean "belt along" - with the windows down and the radio up and my vocal chords straining to keep up. Let's shoot out the lights, ladies.

Of course you are not surprised to hear that I LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC! I really do hope that we get to hear you sing, dear Ashley! Don't leave me out there all cold and alone!

The Gambler is a classic, as I'm sure Niki will attest. How about 'Dixieland Delight'? No?

I grew up listening to Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton (Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Joleeeeeeene, I'm begging of you please don't take my man!) and Linda Ronstandt because my dad was such a big fan, so I love all that old stuff but now, I can't be arsed with the new stuff. Except the Dixie Chicks - I don't care if everyone hates them, I think you should be allowed to say what you think!

By the way, steal my signature and no credit necessary. Got it at mylivesignature.com.

I'm good with the old country, the new country bullshit about "losin my dog and my beer is flat" is annoying as shit!

HOW CAN YOU CALL YOURSELF A GEORGIA GIRL IF YOU DO NOT INCLUDE "DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA" ON THIS LIST???

Sorry. I'm a little touchy today. Totally concur with "The Gambler" (LOVES it, especially drunk-Katie version) and "Dixieland Delight." I would have selected "Friends in Low Places" for my token Garth, but the Alabama song is a good call.

Wow. My parents made me listen to a lot of country crap, but it seems some of it was good after all.

Um, the charge was to identify songs we like that cause embarrassment. And I'll say WITH PRIDE, as a Georgia girl, that I HEART "Devil Went Down to Georgia"!!!

And, by the way, this was one of the few Alabama songs I could find on Seeqpod.

Good point, Ash. I retract my all-caps.

Yes, I tried to comment yesterday, but Blogger wouldn't let me. I, too, am NOT a fan of country, new or old, and I applaud your bravery in coming forth with this deep, dark secret.
