Carrots

Weirdly enough, when Pen posed this topic, it never occurred to me to think about a male character. Instead, I thought about which movie I'd spent the most time watching and re-watching. It might be a tough call - there might a few hard on its heels, like Bridget Jones's Diary and Singin' in the Rain - but Anne of Green Gables and its sequel Anne of Avonlea probably top the list of minutes-per-capita. I even remember at one point, my friend Sarah and I tried to go a whole year without watching it and just couldn't bear it.

And though Anne was a literary character before she graced the screen, Megan Follows brought her to life. When I was little, I thought she was the absolute embodiment of Anne. And since I thought I was the embodiment of Anne myself, I fell in love with the movie. We were both writers, prone to getting lost in our imagination, slightly bookish and never the pretty one. We both harbored secret insecurities and covered them up with wit and cleverness. She's one of the first people I remember wanting to be. So even though it's a bit 10-year-old-girl of me, I have to say Anne Shirley tops my list of favorite movie characters - and is possibly the reason that I know most of "The Highwayman" by heart.

That's funny to me because I haven't decided yet, but my mind automatically goes to male characters, not female.

Excellent choice!

Great choice!
My post tomorrow will go into it more, but I had a similar response of not even considering a male character.
Also, I'm sure if I'd seen the movie recently I would get it, but "Carrots?"

In one of the early scenes in the movie, Gilbert Blythe (my first crush?) pulls Anne's pigtail and calls her "Carrots" - whereupon she breaks a slate over his head.

ah, yes, that's right! Thanks. I need to see this movie again, I remember really loving it, too.

How funny that you mention this; I just watched "Anne of Green Gables" about a week ago and also made reference to Anne on my blog! I can hardly think of anyone more lovable than Anne Shirley, and you're right--Megan Follows is her to a "T."
