While You Were at the Bar 6/9

News you can use:

In a surprising twist, Big Brown did not win the Belmont Stakes and thus the Triple Crown. Da' Tara, a 38-1 long shot, crossed the finish line first while Big Brown made it across last. Big Brown's jockey, Kent Desormeaux did not feel that the horse was injured when he decided to slow him down before the end of the race, just that he was 'out of gas.' A sad day for Big Brown fans did not turn out so sad for those who put money on the long shot. A thirty-eight to one payout would be rather nice!

Retired Rev. V. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop, and his partner of 20 years, Mark Andrew, were joined in a civil union in New Hampshire on Saturday. The men were united in a civil ceremony and then celebrated with a thanksgiving reception at a church in Concord. The ceremony was initially set to be public but the couple changed plans for fear of violence.

A sailboat competing in a regatta from Galveston, Texas to Veracruz, Mexico capsized Friday night. On board were four college students and two safety officers. Five of the men survived in the Gulf of Mexico for 26 hours before being rescued by the Coast Guard. The sixth man, Roger Stone, one of the safety officers, was found in the capsized boat Sunday. The survivors credit Stone with 'heroic efforts' in to ensure their survival.

News you can lose:

If you live in Cuba, and want a sex change operation, by george you can get one for free! The nation's Public Health Ministry approved the operations and will perform them free of charge. I simply can not imagine why this is a hot topic in Cuba? Oh, wait, maybe it's because it's important to Mariela Castro, president Raul Castro's daughter, who is the director of the National Center for Sex Education. Hmmm?
